Almond-Pear Yogurt Muffins
With Olive Oil & a Hint of Spice!
Salt in your hair, ice cream cone dripping on your fingers, but suddenly you’re dreaming of warm spices and baked fruit? Start browsing all things fall now and pin this recipe for later. (Trust me, it’ll be sweater weather before you’ve finished your popsicle!)

Okay, confession time: this isn’t a brand-new recipe. In fact, it’s one of my oldest. I first shared it years ago as a guest post, but lately, I pulled it out of the archives, dusted off the flour, and gave it a little makeover. I’m talking subtle, small updates that still make an impact and turn these muffins so much better:
I swapped out some of the all-purpose flour for almond flour to make the crumb more tender and add that faint nuttiness that pairs beautifully with the pears. I also replaced almond milk with buttermilk for a little extra richness and that signature tang that plays well with yogurt.
Next, I toned down the almond extract (just a whisper now!) and added a dash of cardamom for warmth and depth. And while I was at it, I adjusted the baking soda (because sometimes a little less puff gives you a more even, moist texture).
The result? Still simple. Still seasonal. But now with just enough finesse to make them feel special, whether you’re baking for a fall brunch, packing them in lunchboxes, or nibbling one while you unapologetically scroll pumpkin décor in mid-August.
Oh, and don’t skip the maple glaze. Just don’t!

Almond-Pear Yogurt Muffins
Ingredients
- 1¾ cups all-purpose flour (205 g)
- ½ cup almond flour (50 g)
- ½ cup raw sugar (100 g)
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp ground cardamom (optional)
- 1 large egg (about 50 g)
- 1 carton plain Greek yogurt (200 g)
- ½ cup buttermilk (120 ml)
- ¼ tsp almond extract
- ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil (60 ml)
- 1 cup diced ripe pears (250 g, or two medium pears)
- 2 tbsp toasted almond flakes (see notes)
Simple Maple Glaze (optional)
- 1 cup powdered/icing sugar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (grade A amber syrup)
- 1-1½ tbsp buttermilk (or regular milk)
- ½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200 °C (392 °F). Lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin with olive oil or line with paper liners.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose and almond flour, raw sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and cardamom (if using) until evenly combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, Greek yogurt, buttermilk, almond extract, and olive oil until smooth.
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and gently pour in the wet mixture. Stir lightly with a spatula or wooden spoon—combine just until the batter is moistened but still lumpy; avoid overmixing.
- Prepare the pears by quartering, removing the core, skin, and stem, then dice the flesh into roughly 1 cup (250 g).
- Gently fold the diced pears into the batter, then spoon the mixture evenly into the prepared muffin cups.
- Sprinkle the tops with almond flakes for a subtle crunch.
- Bake the muffins at 200 °C (392 °F) for 25 to 35 minutes, until golden on top and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Oven temperatures vary, so start checking at 25 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5–10 minutes in the tin before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Maple Glaze
- In a medium bowl, whisk together ¾ cup (90 g) of powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup, 1 tablespoon of buttermilk (or milk), and vanilla extract until smooth. For a thinner glaze, stir in up to ½ tablespoon more buttermilk, a few drops at a time, until you reach your desired drizzling consistency.
Notes
- Spread the almond flakes in a single layer on a dry skillet or baking sheet.
- Stovetop method – Toast over medium heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring often, until golden and fragrant.
- Oven method – Bake at 170 °C (340 °F) for 6–8 minutes, keeping a close eye—they burn fast!
- Let them cool before sprinkling on your batter, so they stay crisp during baking.
Why You Shouldn’t Overmix Muffin Batter
It may be tempting to stir your batter until smooth, but resist the urge! Muffins love a light hand. Overmixing activates gluten in the flour, which can result in a dense, tough texture and peaked tops, rather than the soft, tender crumb you’re after. Stir just until the dry ingredients disappear—a few lumps are perfectly fine!

Ingredients
Instructions
Notes
