Curiouser & Curiouser:
An Alice in Wonderland Tree
Down the Rabbit Hole
Transforming my Christmas tree into an Alice in Wonderland dreamscape proved a wonderfully quirky project that often made me wonder whether I am an artistic genius or a little mad! I started collecting figurines two years ago, doing my best to weave the whimsy of Lewis Carroll’s beloved tale into my decor style to create a tree that feels like it belongs at the Mad Hatter’s holiday tea party…
When choosing my figurines, I deliberately avoided the Disney route. While the animated characters are charming, I wanted something more authentic—decorations closer to John Tenniel’s original illustrations. After long hours of browsing and scrolling, I discovered the figurines by British designer Gisela Graham and was immediately charmed. Their intricate details and slightly vintage, storybook-inspired designs bring an enchanting authenticity to any theme, perfectly complementing the magical, offbeat atmosphere I wanted to create.

Find the magic
“Why, sometimes I decorate six impossible things before breakfast!”
The charm of an Alice-inspired Christmas tree lies in its ability to merge nostalgia, fantasy, and a touch of eccentricity. You get to dive headfirst into Wonderland with decorations that echo iconic imagery: oversized playing cards, teacups posing as baubles, and clocks that scream, “We’re late, we’re late!”—for Christmas, naturally.
Choose the Right Decorations
- Miniature Teacups & Teapots
- Oversized Playing Cards
- Hearts & Bows
- Pocket Watches & Clock Faces
- Cakes, Macarons & Bottles (bonus points if you add tiny “Eat Me” and” Drink Me” tags)
- Mushrooms & Woodland Creatures
- Antique Skeleton Keys
- Mad Hatter Hats

Color Schemes
Alice in Wonderland doesn’t scream “matchy-matchy,” so embrace color like you have spilled paint across your tree. Think reds, blues, greens, gold accents, and pops of pastel.

Tree Placement & Lighting
Where your tree stands is as important as the decorations! All of the Wonderland creatures loved a little drama, so set yours where it can shine, maybe near a bookcase that nods to literary origins. After all, Alice drifted into Wonderland while her sister had been reading her a book!
You can use string lights with soft white or multicolored tones to create a dreamy base. For an extra Wonderland twist, tuck a few novelty-shaped lights—mushrooms, stars, or tea lights—into the branches. The goal is to evoke the feeling of wandering through a mysterious garden where everything glows just a bit oddly!
Don’t forget the supporting cast
Place a white rabbit plush or clock figurine at the base of your tree. Wrap gift boxes in thematic paper: think playing cards, clocks, or whimsical illustrations. You could even “drape” pampas grass in floor vases behind your tree to mimic an enchanted countryside.
And for the pièce de résistance? Add a tree topper like no other! Consider a golden crown like the one in my shop or a Mad Hatter hat.
Finishing Touches
By now, your Alice in Wonderland Christmas tree should be a masterpiece—a visual feast of whimsy, nostalgia, and a little madness. Add the finishing touches with a sprinkle of glitter or faux snow for a magical, wintry feel. And while you’re at it, pour yourself a cup of tea (or mulled wine) to admire your handiwork!
