The Caves of Pyrgos Dirou in Oitylo, Peloponnese

April 19, 2016 · by: Athina 5 Comments

Easter Vacation in The Peloponnese {part 2}

Pyrgos Dirou is another small town in the municipal unit of Oitylo. It is located approximately 16 miles/26 km to the south of Areopolis. The overall area of Diros is mostly famous for its caves, the Diros Caves, all part of an underground river that outflows onto the sea at Diros beach. There’s archaeological evidence the caves were places of worship, both in the Old and New Stone Age.

Route from Aeropolis to Pyrgos Dirou

Cave Vlychada

Cave Vlychada (also known as Glyfada), one of the 3 major caves of the Diros Caves complex, was first explored in 1949 even though locals knew about it since the 1900s. By 1960, almost a mile (1.6 km) had been explored and mapped, while today the overall known cave length is more than 9.3 miles/15 km. The first underwater exploration took place in 1970. The total length of accessible passages is nowadays almost 2 miles/3.1 km. The route open to visitors actually is 0.9 miles/1.5 km, 80% of which is a water route accessible by boats and the remaining 20% (almost 0.2 miles/300 meters) is terrain.

The caves in the broader area of Diros were formed hundreds of thousands of years ago. The stalactites & stalagmites (several of the latter currently under water) in Cave Vlychada, were formed when the sea level was much lower than what it is now. Speleologists have discovered fossils of hippos(!), panthers, hyenas, lions, and deer among other animals as well as prehistoric pottery shards. The river running through the cave outflows onto the sea at Diros beach, through a natural opening about 75.5 feet/23 m. to the east of the cave’s natural entrance, 1.6 feet/half a meter above sea level. The water is saline, of high hardness and depths in different parts vary depending on weather conditions! Water temperature is about 57 °F/14 °C, while air temperature ranges from 60.8 to 66.2 °F/16 to 19 °C. The cave’s unique natural entrance, mentioned above, is only 1.6 feet/half a meter in diameter and very close to sea level. In earlier times there were more entries to the cave but these got gradually blocked. To give access to the public, two artificial entrances had to be constructed.

P.S.: I realize as I'm posting this that several online shops are swamped with orders during lockdowns and have decided to go on a brief halt. Also, keep in mind that all shipments are susceptible to delays due to Covid-19 restrictions. My post is only meant to inspire you and not to overwhelm you in any way. If you like the look and wish to go for it, you can totally DIY it—or do something similar—with whatever materials you have at hand. To recreate these particular baubles, use matte black spray-paint and give your old ones a coat or two. Use a small paintbrush and mod-podge to draw snowflakes (or any other shape you 🖤), sprinkle with gold glitter, and voilà! Things should get better. Be patient, keep your chin up, and get creative—it helps battle the blues.
