I had been using—and loving—wooden hangers for years. I got mine from IKEA ages ago and they’re still in excellent condition. They gave such a sleek look to the (spacious) closets we’ve had in our previous apartment that I never realized how much “real estate” they actually occupied in the really small closets of our current one. But with this year’s spring-cleaning mood soon to weigh over me, I decided it was time to switch to the slim velvet ones everyone had been raving about. I was rather chicky about it and went for a full-blown swap: I was going to replace them all at once while on a purge & organizing spree. This included two main closets and a clothes’ rack in our storage unit, so I was in dire need of nearly 70+ pieces. I was also very particular about the color I wanted them in (which I couldn’t find in Greece).
With these factors in mind, I decided to “splurge” and order mine from Amazon. I went the co.uk way to avoid import fees and high shipping costs. I still had to pay the respective (24%) VAT for Greece and shipping within the EU (around 20€). I got two packs of 50 17.7″/45 cm hangers. They feature 360° swivel hooks, tie/belt hangers, and their curves are specially designed so as not to leave those nasty little points in the shoulders of your clothes, with notches to hold straps.

The main criticism against velvet/felt hangers is that their gripping texture (which is their second asset after space-saving and precisely what prevents clothes from slipping and warping, no matter how heavy they are) is not at all forgiving when it comes to showing dust and hair. My argument is that these two—dust and hair!—should be nowhere near fresh clothes in the first place. Look for potential souces of concern like closet walls that haven’t been wipped down for a while, old shaggy carpeting, or pets accessing the space. If the closet it well kept there will be nothing else clinging on these babies other than your neat clothes.
