IKEA BISSA Shoe Cabinet Hack
Updating the living room.
I swear to God, our apartment is funny—and here’s how an IKEA BISSA shoe cabinet hack saved my sanity!
Some technicians’ version of a central satellite-TV system (no cable in Greece/Europe since satellite makes more sense—see mountainous terrain and numerous islands) was to install these ghastly-looking amplifier boxes in every single apartment instead of having a main one run through the building’s antennae/satellite dish. Of course, it’s right in the middle of the living room! And, of course, it’s on a wall where the TV can’t stand because a heating panel also stands in that same spot. And of course, we can’t move it—hellooo plasterboard, used in so many other places of this world, while we have to cut through concrete/bricks and mortar! So our only option is to run meter-long cables around the room, but with no wood paneling to conceal them, of course. So, maybe wall-to-wall furniture can do the trick.

Say hello to that “gorgeous” amplifier box, will you?

As much as I love an empty space, I needed something right by that panel ASAP. I considered our storage needs and also wanted something white, tall, and narrow, with a maximum depth of 12 inches (30 cm). I contemplated some open shelving: I’d place a shelf right above the amplifier and space the rest —above & below it—from that starting point. When looking from above, the amplifier would be covered by the shelf on top, and then a vase, some books, or any box on the shelf below it would conceal its front. Then, again, no… not really.
Enter the IKEA BISSA Shoe Cabinet
It measures 19 1/4 ” in width, 11 ” in depth, and 53 1/8 ” in height. And note that there’s no back panel (which would help with adequate ventilation). You can adjust the space in the shoe compartments by moving or taking away the dividers, so I figured that by sacrificing an entire compartment (using just the facade and none of its back parts), I’d create a pocket to fit all that amplifier junk. And since it features three compartments (holding 2-4 pairs of shoes each), I’d still be left with two for at least eight pairs. All for 40$. You couldn’t beat that!

So now you see it…

And now you don’t (excuse the poorly lit phone pics).

I ended up hacking the middle compartment, the one at the most suitable height, which fell right onto the amplifier box. The only problem I encountered was my idea of using only the facade of the compartment without its back parts. It turns out that the front panel needs them to weigh it backward and help it shut properly. See how it’s not flush against the frame in the pic below?

Fortunately, the fix was super easy: I used the middle divider (same width but smaller depth) as the base, and the backboard (same width, even smaller depth) as a middle divider. In addition to the cabinet itself, I’ve also modified the user’s guide slightly to provide a clearer understanding of what I did.

Ta-da!! Enough weight to weigh backward the front and shut it flush, enough space at the back to fit the mess, plus space for two more pairs of shoes (giving me a total of 10 out of 12).

And that, my friends, is why, despite all the comedy-inspiring, horror stories about self-assembling out there, it truly IS a good idea to be able to manipulate your furniture to fit specific needs. (There’s no way a custom-made piece would cost less than 40$ —unless you can build your own furniture, in which case I love you!)

Great idea! And lots of patience! You rawk!
Oh, I’m usually very very patient around furniture… even the ones I have to assemble myself! It’s the people that usually drive me nuts, hahahahahaha!!
Ha!!! I understand that one!!!
First off – bravo – bravo for putting that together. My mom would have surely had extra parts, gotten frustrated and then kicked it to the curb. Your final piece looks like it has been there for years. Great job! XOXO – Bacon
Awww, thanks Bacon! Kudos to your mom for achieving all the great things she does… Never mind shoe cabinets! xoxo
