Organize Your Kitchen Cabinets

May 20, 2015 · by: Athina 2 Comments

Updating the kitchen #1

I’ve been having some nice chats lately, on social media, on organizing kitchens and pantries—especially, small kitchens and pantries! Now, let me explain what was going on, in my very own little kitchen a couple of months ago: My cabinets were not exactly a mess but they were still loaded and I was running out of space so much so, that several of my heavy appliances had nowhere else to go but up! I kept storing my stand mixer, bread maker and halogen table-top oven on the very top of the kitchen cabinets or on top of my sitting room shelving units!!! Sooo, every time I needed to use one of these items I had to break out a step stool, climb up, pull item down, break out a cleaning cloth, give item a good wipe—see how this is going, inconvenient much? You bet. And let us not touch the aesthetic aspect of the situation…  yeah, let’s not go there at all!

I won’t lie, I had to purge. A lot! But after all the purging and a basket shopping-spree, things were looking better. Not exactly how I’d like them to be, but better. Considering the small apartment space I have to work with, much better. And if I may put my two cents in, here’s the advice I can give you if you’re looking to organize a small rental apartment kitchen (other than refraining from tearing everything apart, down to the grout):

Purge
  • Purge, purge, and purge! Chances are if you are using an appliance or tool bi-monthly, they are not really functional. They are just sitting there occupying space. I passed my halogen table-top oven (which I had only used twice in the past year) to a family friend and she was overjoyed.
Declutter
  • Get rid of any mismatched items like spice jars, coffee mugs, food containers, even small kitchen appliances. It is another thing to intentionally avoid being “matchy-matchy” (or to carefully curate a colorful clay pot collection, etc.) and quite another to hoard random items. Try, over time, to invest in sets and it will pay out. Keep things unified by choosing, for example, all chrome or all white appliances—they don’t have to be of the same brand line or anything high-tech and pricy—or by hunting for the perfect cheap set of spice jars.
Baskets corral items & create negative space
  • A conventional apartment kitchen doesn’t usually feature ceiling-high cabinets. Use large baskets to store any small appliances you don’t use often or seasonal items (like Christmas or Halloween dinner sets, etc.) on top of them. [Edited after six months to say, no matter how cute common baskets may look, go for ones that have lids!] If you do have ceiling-high cabinets—in which case I hate envy you—keep said items corraled by category, on the very top shelves.

  • Use smaller baskets (like these Curver My Style 196859 Storage Box Wicker Look Stackable S Polypropylene) to organize items at the upper parts of your cabinets. This way items don’t get shoved at the very back, where you can neither see or reach them, and disappear into thin air!
Balance upwards instead of downwards
  • Store heavier items (like stainless steel stand mixers) at the bottom cabinets. It’s easier to lift and balance weight in an upward motion than in a downward one.
Create a sleeker look
  • Did I say “purge” already?
  • Don’t leave your cleaning stuff (aka sponges, brushes, dishwasher soap bottles, etc.) visible. Keep them handy in a cupboard above or under the sink and sneak them back in there when you are done for the day.
  • Don’t use a dish drainer. It’s extremely convenient, I’ll give you that. But it’s also a clutter deamon. Use a drying mat, then wipe dry, and stash everything back in their place.
  • Keep your fridge surface clean—forget cute magnets, children drawings, lists, family pics, recipes, et all. Harsh, I know!
  • Did I say “purge” enough?

You can scroll further down the page for some before and after peeks on top of, and into, my cabinets, as well as through all of my junk—you’re welcome!

Kitchen Cabinet Organization | Kicking Back the Pebbles

OMG, Brava! I introduced something similar at work for about 80 people, but at home I’m still reluctant to purge material. The system we introduced is called the 5 sigma (sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain).

P.S.: I realize as I'm posting this that several online shops are swamped with orders during lockdowns and have decided to go on a brief halt. Also, keep in mind that all shipments are susceptible to delays due to Covid-19 restrictions. My post is only meant to inspire you and not to overwhelm you in any way. If you like the look and wish to go for it, you can totally DIY it—or do something similar—with whatever materials you have at hand. To recreate these particular baubles, use matte black spray-paint and give your old ones a coat or two. Use a small paintbrush and mod-podge to draw snowflakes (or any other shape you 🖤), sprinkle with gold glitter, and voilà! Things should get better. Be patient, keep your chin up, and get creative—it helps battle the blues.

When it comes to superfood antics, some like kale, When it comes to superfood antics, some like kale, pomegranate, green or matcha teas, nuts, and berries, usually get all of the glory. And yet, more research is uncovering the age-defying, disease-fighting, fat-blasting super-powers of commoner foods you've been likely overlooking.
