Osman Shah’s Mosque – Το τζαμί του Οσμάν Σαχ
Since the last couple of months have not been worth any reference or remembrance(!) I often cast negative thoughts aside by returning to my September days in Trikala, Thessaly (you can take a glimpse in a previous post of the little fellas I befriended during my daily walks by the river).
Here’s what lies at the end of the newly laid-out riverside pathway:
The Koursoum Mosque (Osman Shah’s Mosque)
The “Mosque awakens the memories of another historical era and brings to the minds of visitors images from the civilization of the East. It is situated after the entrance to the town and to the south, on the Karditsa side. Tradition has it that Prince Osman Shah, the son of Sultan Suleiman (1520-1566), arrived in Trikala, hunted and sick. Because he was healed in Trikala, he built the Mosque in memory of being saved. The Mosque was built in the mid-16th century by the renowned architect Sinan Pasha (1490–1588), of Greek origin. The Koursoum Mosque is a characteristic monument of eastern architecture and stands out for its grand dome, which is semicircular and covered with lead; thus its name (koursoum=lead).”
[Excerpt quoted from the official portal of the Municipality of Trikala, where you can read more about the Mosque and browse info on the entire area.]

The Mosque currently operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and features a permanent exhibition showcasing archaeological artifacts from recent excavations throughout the entire region. Here are some interesting pieces:

Pipes like these (of Eastern origin) came in three pieces: the bowl, [lu-las] in Greek, a long wooden stem made from cherry, jasmine, lemon, or orange tree branches, which flavored the tobacco, and a mouthpiece called [e-ma-mes].

Το Μιχράμπ – The Mihrab:
A semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque indicates the “qibla,” meaning the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca and, hence, the direction that Muslims face when praying. This is the interior qibla wall—there is another Mihrab on the exterior wall of the Koursoum Mosque, near the entrance, which I will show you further below.

Oh, and did you notice these strange marks at the bottom of some of the dishes?…

This is how they happened:

Small, clay Tripod Stilts were used to stack pots vertically on top of each other (preventing glazed surfaces from sticking together and facilitating the circulation of hot air from the fire chamber), thus maximizing the space utility of the kilns.

Much like the zenana or the Greek [yenaikonites], the women’s section in Greek Orthodox churches, this remarkably steep staircase on the right-hand side of the entrance leads to a loft intended for use by women only. There is also a left-hand side staircase leading to the same loft that hasn’t been restored.

Very close to the Koursoum Mosque lie the buildings of the city’s old prison! Although the prison was relocated several decades ago, the main building remained unused for years until a very recent excavation (2011) revealed that it rests upon the ruins of an old Turkish Bath associated with the greater Mosque area. It is currently under reconstruction and will hopefully be accessible to the public soon.

Last, but not least, the luscious banks of river Litheos:

…and a sunset over Thessaly’s cotton fields!

Do scroll back to the top, to the exhibition pieces, and let me know which is your favorite artifact. Mine are the dice & pipe bowl, for sure… yeah I know, prone to smoking and gambling I am!
